You’ve already probably heard of MySQL but now you should heard about MariaDB. MariaDB is better all around for database performance, optimization, and well heck – they have better developers. Why should you use Maria instead of MySQL? Why wouldn’t you? I would say do a load test on Maria / MySQL comparing how the two different binaries operate and how they handle everything. Don’t trust me – go here and review the load test conducted by the dev’s.

Simple steps to downloading it on Ubuntu VM:

  1. Go straight to the source
  2. Make sure you know what version of ubuntu or deb you’re running
    1. Run lsb_release -a in your terminal
  3. Make sure you note the version/name
  4. Follow the below directions:
    1. sudo apt-get install python-software-properties
    2. sudo apt-key adv –recv-keys –keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 0xcbcb082a1bb943db
    3. sudo add-apt-repository ‘deb http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/mariadb/repo/5.5/ubuntu {deb version} main’
    4. *NOTE* if you add a incorrect server you probably will have to delete that from the apt source.list
      1. You can do this by typing, sudo vi /etc/apt/source.list.d
      2. And deleting the incorrect server
  5. Followed by:
    1. sudo apt-get update
    2. sudo apt-get install mariadb-server

That’s it! Now off you go!
